How to Spend a Lovely Day in Franklin, Indiana: A Local’s Guide

If you’re looking for a day trip with the perfect mix of history and small-town heart, Franklin, Indiana, is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss. This is my hometown, where I grew up before spending 11+ years in the hustle of New York City. Watching from afar, I’ve seen Franklin blossom into an even more delightful spot, adding cozy shops, local flavor, and a level of charm that feels like stepping into the Hallmark Channel.

Now that I live here again, it’s been such an experience to rediscover the town through new spots and old favorites alike. From hunting for vintage treasures to sipping on small-batch spirits and catching a movie in a theater straight out of another era, Franklin has something for everyone. Below, I’ve put together some of the best ways to enjoy a memorable day in the best town in Indiana. 🙂

1. Start at Madison Street Salvage

Begin your adventure at Madison Street Salvage, a fantastic spot to hunt for one-of-a-kind architectural pieces, vintage finds, and quirky treasures. This place is packed with personality and gives new life to salvaged pieces from historic homes and buildings, perfect for home projects or adding character to any space. Plus, all of the proceeds go back to restoring old houses and buildings here in Franklin!

2. Explore Salvage Sisters and Thanks for the Thyme

For more vintage décor and other treasures, head to Salvage Sisters and Thanks for the Thyme. These two neighboring shops have been some of my favorite antique stores since I was in college!

2. Pop into Wild Geese Book Shop

A quick walk brings you to Wild Geese Book Shop, a cozy, independent bookstore where you can grab a cup of coffee, chat with the friendly staff, and discover your next favorite read. With its inviting vibe and thoughtfully curated shelves, this shop is a haven for book lovers.

3. Coffee and Lunch at Main & Madison Market Café

Just down the street, Main & Madison Market Café is ready to welcome you with delicious coffee, teas, and a tempting array of pastries and lunch options. The café is actually in the town’s first hospital building, which is such a fun bit of history to think about as you enjoy a latte and one of their incredible sandwiches. Pro tip: You can even order half a sandwich with half a soup—perfect for a cozy lunch!

4. Stroll Through Franklin’s Unique Boutiques

If you’re exploring with kids, Toodley Doo Toys is a delightful stop! This local treasure is packed with classic toys, clever games, and gifts you won’t find anywhere else.

And when you’re ready to keep exploring, Franklin has more charming boutiques to discover. By Tavi offers beautiful, ethically made clothing, Brick Street Boutique brings together trendy styles, and Vintage Whimsy and Eclectic Jade are full of unique finds and handcrafted treasures. It’s also a really nice walk around the square to hit all these shops, so take your time!

    6. Sip Local Spirits at Haberdasher Distillery

After some shopping, take a load off with a craft cocktail at Haberdasher Distillery. Known for its artisanal spirits and relaxed ambiance, Haberdasher is a great spot to unwind. Drop in Thursday through Saturday during their open hours (Thursday and Friday from 3 PM to 9 PM, Saturday from 12 PM to 7 PM) for a taste of their unique concoctions.

    7. Dinner Options: Blue Cactus, Greek’s Pizza, or Garment Factory

For dinner, Franklin has a few great choices. If it’s Tuesday or Thursday, treat yourself to a meal at the Garment Factory. The Garment Factory lives up to its name, it’s a gorgeous restaurant, bar, and event center in an old garment factory.

Or, for some great pizza or some great Mexican food, check out Greek’s Pizza and Blue Cactus!

    8. Catch a Classic Film at the Artcraft Theater

If it’s a Friday or Saturday, round out your evening at the historic Artcraft Theater, which screens classic movies in a beautifully restored, vintage setting. This theater is a cherished part of Franklin’s history and a wonderful way to experience the community’s love for restoring old buildings.

I’ve been to a lot of small towns, big cities, and places all around the world… and I know I’m biased, but there is something very special and charming about Franklin, Indiana. And hope more people make the trek and discover its magic!

This list is also does NOT include all of the charming businesses in town- for more check out Discover Downton Franklin’s Instagram and website! It will have all of our upcoming festivals and big events.
